Assuming a phalaenopsis was your gateway into the world of orchids, dendrobiums are kinda the same and kinda not. Light is probably the biggest factor. They want a lot of it. I have mine under growlights for 12 hour. It’s almost too much for my cattleyas but the dendrobiums probably would take more. Luckily they have strong growth and been consistent bloomers. One has been in constant bloom for about a year and a half at this point. They like to dry out more than phals so no sphagnum. I let the canes tell me when to water. They will wrinkle a little when thirsty. Soak the pot for 15 min and the canes should plump back up in a day. They are thirstier when in bloom. I would recommend a very chunky bark and a well ventilated pot. Keep the pot small. They like a tight fit. They tend to get top heavy so a heavy cachepot will help avoid any unfortunate tumbles. Don’t worry about the roots. They will go everywhere regardless of what you do. You probably will not have to worry about a dormant period but do some research on your particular type.
