Hello fellow plant lovers! I’m looking into building a terrarium (or something similar) with life (insects, fish, invertebrates, etc) to provide additional enrichment for my 2 cats. I know this may sound silly, but I recently moved to a much smaller place with no outdoor area and they are not thrilled. I want to give them any and every opportunity to be even mildly entertained and this is one of the ideas I keep coming back to. Since it would involve life, I want to make sure I get it right. - Are there any resources (educational or otherwise) that helped you when developing your terrariums? - Is there a particular terrarium, set up, or inhabitant you would suggest? - Any other advice, suggestions, or things to watch out for? I definitely need something that can close so the cats can’t get into it and to keep the inhabitants safe. I would like something in a 10gal container or smaller. My one cat has poor eye sight so I would like the inhabitants to be more active and visible than perhaps a praying mantis. Thank you for your advice in advance! We appreciate it đŸ™‚đŸ±đŸ±đŸŒż

    I have a fish tank with aquatic plants, maybe get a few goldfish (or a beta) and plants. I just bought the plants from the pet store and planted them in artificial rocks, works pretty good and it won’t stop growing! Good luck, love the kitties!!

      That sounds lovely! I saw a Reddit thread that mentioned that fish tanks were more work than they’re worth if you’re getting it to entertain cats, but a fish tank was my first thought, and I think they (and I) would enjoy it! Plus, the thread wasn’t among plant parents, so I think I would like it much more than some of the Reddit commenters. I love the idea of having living plants, like you mentioned.

      I would get 2-4 plants as they help the water stay cleaner for longer. Plants also help add needed nutrients to the water so it’s good to water your plants with!

    Oh my god their snuggling is so precious! đŸ„č I’ve had isopods in a terrarium before. I’m not sure if they’d entertain cats though. Maybe a larger white variety like Porcellio “dairy cow” would catch their eyes. I think the biggest hobby isopod species is Porcellio magnificus. 10 gallons would be generous for them, but nice room for decor and plants. You’ll need a secure lid so they don’t get out. Typically they’re not interested in the home environment, but us plant parents tend to have the higher humidity levels that they like. But they are harmless to the home. Other than that, a 10g would be perfect for a beta fish. Also recommend a secure lid in that case because I’ve had a beta jump ship before 😱 Good luck! Your cats are soooo precious đŸ˜»

      Thank you for the kitty love 💕 they're definitely my ‘lil babies. I'm super interested in something like isopods, especially after following a YouTube channel called AntsCanada, it's a guy who built this enormous vivarium and is documenting the inhabitant's lives and interactions. I'll look into the Porcellio “dairy cow” and magnificus varieties. Thank you for the suggestion, I've never heard of them! I've heard of fish jumping ship before, that's got to be tough to come home to. Definitely will need a secure lid with my two rascals lol Thank you for your advice!

    I love that you’re so dedicated to your cats! I think a terrarium would be a great idea, but also cat grass. My cat is an indoor cat and just loves grass so I got her some.

      I appreciate the kind wordsâ˜șïžđŸ’• we have a subscription to FreshPatch but I’m starting to feel like the cat grass package we’ve been getting
 isn’t cat grass(?) It just looks like regular grass and the girls aren’t as excited about it as when I grab cat grass from the store. But I do like having the patch of grass for when they do choose to nap on it so maybe I’ll just have to re-read the product description lol
