Where can I get lithops online? I have absolutely no idea haha, I was thinking Amazon but idk how much trust I should put into it, especially when it comes to live plants. Any good gardening sites or am I making a Home Depot run sometime soon?
Finally got my hands on some mature Lithops after being impatient with my tiny babe from seed. Now I need all the advice! Is there a better time than not to repot these guys? I know they want good space for roots. Do I wait and water until they start wrinkling? I’ve had them for about a month now, but scared to water. lol Dave, give me your 101 class!

After collecting a few more species (one ordered online, the rest being luck at various Home Depot), decided that it was time again to attempt an ID on some of my Lithops. Before jumping to ask the kind man from Cape Town who I befriended online after wondering about wrinkling mimicry plants, I rediscovered this site. I have not found a more simple, user-friendly guide to Lithops than this. I mean, I’m still guessing on most of mine because they won’t stop adapting. lithops-passion.com/living-stones/recognizing/
I am new to this species…but I got my first one today…I call her JLo 😁 I have ordered more because I am intrigued by them…but what kind of soil is best for them? Please give me some info…thank you 😊
Brought home my first lithops today 😄
Okay. I’m still fighting mealie bugs, and the last straw was finding them on a couple Lithops. I had to toss out a really cool Mammillaria elongata monstrose something something because it sat too long in water (my bad). I saved a couple of pieces to propagate, didn’t do it, and missed one little chunk that fell behind another plant. That little chunk was all the bugs needed, and then they moved on to consuming the discarded Lithops leaves. And I went almost feral over the idea of tossing out these particular Lithops, which have EVOLVED over a year. So I had to do a LOT of surgery and removal of old leaves on plants who still needed another few weeks or something. But that is speculation due to the insane splits of two faces becoming three, or maybe that’s going to be six next year. Frustrating and amazing.
I’ve been head down on many things, one of which happened so intently when I found a couple different species at Home Depot. I ordered some seeds (not Lithops - it’s a surprise) and received seven bonus babies; the blue pot is plants from Mountain Crest Gardens. Note that a bunch have reproduced as they split. Or cloned themselves. It’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers pod life, for sure, which makes me wonder the usual things humans do. Do these plants know something about the weather that I don’t? I’m assuming that most of this is adaptation to the conditions I provided. The Mars Hydro grow-tent-sized light over my “Hot Boxers” microsite is so flipping powerful, and I don’t doubt that it did something. The whole jam with sucs is their rapid adaptation. So much to think about. ps I also met someone who has encouraged me to become the odd succulent/Lithops lover I should be lol. That’s funny, but true, and rules. Most of these are going to flower this year 😳
hey!! i wanted to ask what you guys thought of how my lil butts are doing since winter is leaving and spring is coming! my big one split weird only half shriveled and there is a twin in the other half, i’ve been wondering if i should leave it be to do its thing or try to preform mild surgery to get the twin out, she looks stuck to me, other than that i was sent the other big one(s) and they seem to have bruises, i just want to make sure its not scale or anything like that, several plants from that seller arrived with abrasions like that so just been wondering! ty in advance!
is it time to water?
I can’t stop. I tried, but then I saw another color, and another. I am at the point of “Okay, that’s enough for the year,” but I feel like I would regret not getting them. All Home Depot, $5 each.
Any tips on taking care of these lil guys? I got them back in August and have seen 1-2 new sprouts, but I feel like they’re too tall and spread apart now. I saw other posts in here where there were new leaves coming up in the crack, but I don’t see any sign of that happening here. They’re under a grow light as well and in a west window, so I’m not sure why they’re growing tall. Unless they do it for other reasons than to get sunlight. Thanks!
My lithop started splitting about a month ago. It was going well but now it’s melting. I didn’t water it. This doesn’t seem like the normal splitting process, but this is my first lithop so I could be wrong. Does anyone have any advice or thoughts?
Just got my first Lithops! Any tips on owning one?
See the yellow-white dot? I know what it is. I know because I watered my first Lithops and placed it in direct sun for an evening. Water drops act like magnifying glass, and you get a little burn. I lost my mind when it happened for the first time until remembering that these get a new, clean outfit every year. It’s not an excuse and I wouldn’t do it on purpose, but it’s only one strike so far 🙂 By "until remembering" I mean I panicked and said yep, this is out of your league and waited for them to die; I stopped holding my breath over it four months later when they fully cast off and consume their old bodies. Weird to write that. I didn't have this specific species until now (I still have to look that up). It sits in a shark’s mouth.
One month progress on these little babies!
One year (the splitting is the most current photo). These are around three years old and should flower this or next year. How is it that these little buttons are capable of a 40-year lifespan?!
The plumped up photo is the day I took them home (late 2022). We’re in splitting season now, and all mine seem to be progressing.
Planta is advising me to water all of my lithops tomorrow (I’ve had them for about a month now) but I read a few comments on here saying not to water them if they’re splitting - but I only have one pot where they look like they’re thriving and not shriveled. Most of the pots have shriveled ones and maybe a few splitting - so I’m unsure whether to water or not?
