Thought I would post one final update on my propagating a pineapple from a cut top for those interested in seeing how it is progressing. I finally moved it indoors for winter. At the rate it is growing it will definitely need a new pot for spring when moved back outside. Previous photos are in the plant link.

Oh wow!! How did you do that? I’d love to grow one from the grocery store too! They’re really pretty.

It was actually really easy! After removing the the top I trimmed off all the residual fruit. When I was done it resembled an inverted cone (without a point). I could see small root buds within the layers of what was left. After that I dipped it in rooting compound and buried it down to the first leaves. I did trim any brown and dying tops off the existing leaves and just watered it as recommended by Planta. Since they are part of the bromeliad family I make sure they get watered from the top and misted regularly.

It works surprisingly well and quickly too. Ours is like 5 feet tall at this point. No fruits yet.

YIKES! I had no idea they got that big. May have to find a friend with a sunroom or greenhouse. 😳
