Hi! I have two propagations in the works that I’m hoping to get some advice/reassurance on! The first picture is my string of pearls. A friend of mine gave me a bunch of tiny little cuttings (5-6 roots all maybe 1-3 in long) of her string of pearls. I laid the cuttings on top of some succulent soil and poked the roots down into the top a bit. I’m doing my best to keep it moist under my grow light…any other advice? The second picture is a variation of a donkeys tails (it’s a really long scientific name, I’ll have to check). I followed the same process as I did with the string of pearls, but this strand was a bit more sad when I got it. So it feels like I should be doing more to help it take root! I live in the Midwest so true sunlight can be very hit or miss this time of year (it’s been rainy and gloomy for days now). Anything else I can do to ensure these lil babies make it?

Try not to keep the soil too moist - they have shallow root systems and just a little too much moisture will lead to root rot. Generally succulents you can lay on soil and they’ll do their thing. SOP are beautiful but annoyingly high maintenance at times. I have 2 that are doing well but I’m scared to repot them when the time comes 😬😅 Good luck! 🪴

I will definitely be more conscious of how damp the soil is. When I was looking into propagating SOP, someone had wrapped theirs in Saran Wrap to essentially create a moist greenhouse effect, so I’m glad you mention letting them do their thing otherwise I would’ve kept going on that track. I will keep checking the roots periodically the next few weeks in case it changes

I’ve read so much conflicting info about some plants, especially SOP! I live in zone 9b and what has worked for me is just leaving them alone, not watering until the pearls are a little squishy, and whispering positive affirmations to it 😂

Where did you learn about your zone? I feel like looking into my specific region would be so reassuring 😅 I’m always worried about sunlight in my apartment, especially in the spring in the Midwest

You can enter your zip code here and it’ll tell you your zone. You can then search for plants that will do well in your zone. 😄 planthardiness.ars.usda.gov

What a cool sedum! I’m in the SE Detroit area, and feel your comment about our light.

I’m in NE Wisconsin and it truly is so hit or miss. We haven’t had good direct sun in almost a week but I don’t wanna turn my grow light up and accidentally scorch or burn my lil babies. I’m too emotionally attached to my plants

I’m Fargo, ND. I kill literally anything but for some reason my string of pearls love me. They’re giving me hope. I had a bunch in starter pots in my kitchen window that faces east. Once they got really long I decided to attempt to report them just last month. I thought I killed them when the ends started to turn brown but I just let it be and dry out. Eventually I started seeing some growth again. I just bought some new plants this weekend and found this app to help me not kill them. It told me to water my string of pearls again since it had been a month. Hoping they’ll still be ok 🤞🏼 I love these guys and hope yours take root! Idk about propagation but with my I make sure there’s a hole in the bottom of the pot (so my hanging one is plastic and I used a nail to create some holes) and when I water it I hang it over my kitchen sink and let it sit until it’s done dripping and then place back in my window for a month. That’s about all I do for mine and then every day open my curtains and drool over my plant for a bit 😂 I got a string of turtles yesterday that I’m super excited about.
