My succulent leaf experiment is starting to work. What do I do now?… | Propagating & Sowing | Planta community

My succulent leaf experiment is starting to work. What do I do now? How long do I leave it like this? It has been on my window sill like this for about 2 weeks. Some mist for moisture in the beginning and not much since. How do I take care of it now that it’s growing? I’ve never done this before. On the whim experiment 😊

Just keep doing what you’re doing and eventually the mother leaf will fall off as the new plant becomes stable on its own

Thank you so much! Do you think I should mist the top layer of soil every so often to keep it semi moist or let it be dry?

Mist for the next couple weeks for sure

I wouldn’t recommend misting. The baby will take all its water from the big mother leaf until the leaf is completely dried out, and adding water may lead to rot from overwatering.

Thanks for the advice! I didn’t think about it that way.

As you can see, everyone has their own way of doing it. I have propagated 100’s of succulent leaves and the most successful way I have found is to do what you are doing. I keep misting because it allows the mother leaf to hang around and keep feeding the baby plant as long as possible. Sometimes when the leaf dies too soon, the baby plant doesn’t make it because it’s too weak and small of a plant. The leaf can give all the moisture to the baby plant but it will dry up faster. Misting will also help the roots get longer faster because they are seeking moisture. I find if I keep misting, I get more robust baby plants. If you are concerned about rotting, see how long it takes for the top of the leaf to dry out. If it’s a few hours, it’s fine. If it takes longer, you could put a fan next to it.😊
