It’s a limited resource. It is harvested from bogs and the world is running out.

Do you have any suggestions for an alternative medium?

Coco coir. But you have to adjust PH with something since you aren’t getting it from the peat.

you can get alternative ingredients and premixed soils online by searching for a chunky houseplant mix or soilless mix. i prefer products from sol soils and repotme.com, but i’ve also heard good things online about molly’s aroid mix, bros with hoes “dirt bag”, and rosysoil, which is more on the expensive side but is composed primarily of an interesting material called biochar that is supposedly very eco-friendly. i highly recommend doing some research into alternative media for your houseplants as there are so many options out there and you will have to figure out what sort works best for your plants and your environment. generally, the hotter and drier the environment, the denser your media should be, and vice versa— colder and damper environments require a coarse and thoroughly aerated mix so that plants don’t rot before the water is used and evaporated. airflow is a key factor to this too.
