I’m trying now…found a shoot at the base of a tree next to my apartment.

Depends on the species; ficus benjamina will root so easily that you can stick it in dirt with no rooting hormone and it'll thrive. Oaks are nearly impossible to root, so the standard practice is to give up and do grafting or seed propagation. In general, the trees that root more easily are lowland species that live near water. In the wild, they'd get damaged from storms more often, so being able to root from broken pieces is a survival strategy for them. Trees that grow in drier inland and mountain conditions tend to be much harder to root

My mom planted four trees from cuttings at our old house and planted them at our new house 20 years ago and they still stand tall today. All from water propagating one inch thick segments of a branch. I remember she had them in the garage in water for months and the roots were crazy long before we finally planted them.
