i like to wait until the spider pups have lots of aerial roots, at least 1/4” long. this ensures they’ll survive being removed from the mother plant. i’ve had the most success rooting spiders directly in soil/soilless media or in perlite before planting in soil/soilless media. many also have success rooting in water but i find it produces a root system that’s too weak for an easy transition to soil, so i only plant in water if the intention is for the plant to live in water or a semi-hydro setup permanently. make sure only the root nubs are buried/underwater. any buried leaves will likely die. if they’re in soil, water when the first inch of media is dry for the first week or two to help them establish, then after a few weeks water once the soil is halfway dry. after a few months you can let the soil dry totally as you would a mature spider plant.

Wow thank you so much this was so helpful! I now have an idea of what I’m going to do next! I definitely want to experiment with a semi-hydro setup and the rest I will start with perlite! I will check on the nubs of the pups to see if they’re ready for a field trip!!

I did the method of planting a baby spider while still attached to mother. It was really fun and worked amazingly! I’m on my third one. One cool thing I thought of was using a paper clip to keep the baby in the soil. Cuz no matter how much I tried I couldn’t get the babies to stay in the soil. So I bent a paper clip back at the half way mark. Used steel scissors to cut it in half and pushed it over the stem into the soil to hold baby down. Worked great!
