I've been working on preserving a rare variegated english oak. The original tree was grafted, and has since reverted. I have several air layers in the works, and today i took this cutting. So far propagation has been very unsuccessful, but hopefully the new attempts will work out

Usually when first propagating you only use water so you can find visible roots that are growing to then add into soil, not sure about trees and if they differ from house plants though, good luck !

With trees, you usually use rooting hormone as a powder and stick directly into dirt. I've gone for sphagnum because previous attempts got too dry between waterings. Some plants like ficus are great about cuttings and don't even need hormone, but oaks are pretty challenging by anyone's standards. I might try a water prop at some point
