Hi. I saved this monstera albo from root rot months ago by placing it in water with a pothos cutting and an air stone. These are her roots, brownish but not brown. Is it ready for soil? I tried doing the leca route but they started to look like this after I tried it so I’m thinking it might help time for soil. Just want to avoid root rot again. Last pic is how she was before.

Those roots look happy and healthy to me! Browning water root’s isn’t a huge concern, but if they go mushy that’s a problem. Its very common for water roots to brown though. Do you want to transfer to soil? These guys can survive in water as long as you add fertilizer appropriately. If you want to transfer I would wait until spring.

Thank you!!! I mean I was going to try leca but got spooked with the color of the roots (not mushy tho). Can these be in leca too? Also unclear on the frequency of fertilizer. I use a hydroponic fertilizer whenever I change its water. Not a lot in case it damages the roots. I just don’t know why it’s not pushing out new leaves :(

You can do leca, I don’t, but thats just a personal choice. Give it time, once it gets more secondary roots it will start to produce more growth. I use fertilizer every time I change the water 👍🏻 Be careful about how much you use, I use 1/8 tsp / 1.5 L of water 1x/week. So you might want to cut back until its got a large secondary root system.

An air stone was a good call! Not many people know about them for plants. I still have some put away from when I had aquariums. I’ll have to keep them in mind if I need to do a root rescue like that!

Wait until the roots are a few inches long and have secondary roots
