   Looks like you a propping in mud. I would suggest dumping the soil and adding some extra fresh soil to help dry it out.

     Building on that, I’d recommend a soil/perlite mix, and a clear container or bag to trap humidity.

   I always start my African violet propagating from a leaf in water. Then after planting when there is a good root ball, I plant in African Violet soil, cover them with plastic bag and put them under a grow Light (or in a sunny window) with a water tray underneath. Don’t fill the tray with water just let it sit with some water underneath it. I’m including some photos so you can see what I mean. Good luck!
