Taking things without the owner’s permission is theft. It’s that simple.

Usually I ask the employees, who don't care

imo: It’s not stealing if they let you and there’s no moral dilemma if the pieces were already no longer viable. I would just ask if I could have dropped proppable pieces found around and assure them I’d never actually steal. Also, it can be hard to get props that small to take. Might benefit you more to just buy a small plant.

I usually ask employees if it's ok to take a cutting from a plant and they usually don't care

That’s perfect to my moral compass!

If it’s broken off, go for it. Also, though, go ask. No one cares about these plants as much as you do lol. You think my rebel-teen self hasn’t wanted to flick all the dying Lithops out of the pots and into my pockets?

I’m there in the aisles looking at the overwatered stuff and thinking “It belongs in a museum!”

I hadn’t really paid attention to all the fallen soldiers before. I think I’m going to make a monster.
