I have tried quite a few times to propagate my pothos, but every time i try nothing happens. i make sure to snip at the nodes, and will keep the jar in a bright window, but nothing grows. what will help? also, what kind of timeline should i be expecting on the growth?

How frustrating. Hmmm, are you leaving several 3-5 nodes without leaves near the bottom for root development? Pothos are generally easy to propagate, so this is curious. I’ve attached a photo of my Neon pothos cutting taken 15 days ago and no real roots, but the nodes are swollen. I’ve not timed it, but I’d say maybe it needs a bit more time in cooler to cold seasons. I wish you luck.

Curious what you mean by “snip at the nodes”? You don’t want to make the cut at the node, you’ll want to cut at least a minimum of a 1/4-1/2 inch away from it.

And it can take a while depending on the variety, so patience is key!

Take a picture with a pothos cutting in the container of water. It would be easier to comment if we can see your setup. The other things that can increase the chance of success: 1) Remove all leaves under water to prevent rot 2) place more leaf/root nodes under water for more roots 3) completely change the water (and clean the jar) every week or sooner if the water is dirty 4) wait for at least 2 inches of root growth before planting in a well draining potting mix 5) add SuperThrive plant vitamins with each change of water 6) place it in bright indirect sunlight or grow light (better) for at least 6 hours 7) place in a warmer area to encourage roots

I agree with all points in Sunny’s comment. 6-Light and 7-temp are the most important in my opinion. I start with distilled water and then start to add diluted fert once roots start appearing. I keep my props under a grow light and on a small heating mat. Been experimenting with using an aquarium pump with an air stone to keep the water oxygenated. This is about 3-4 weeks of root growth. Starting to get secondary roots on most of the cuttings now.

I have had this in water since feb. 1st, so just over two weeks, and there has been no change. i’ve changed the water twice, and am keeping it in a east facing window because that is all i have. i have multiple other things propagating, and have planted many seeds that have sprouted which are all the other containers, so i’m not sure why nothing is happening with the pothos.

Leave about half below the node and then cut. I have read people leave it sit out to harden a bit (there’s a word for it but idk what it is) about 30min. Then put it in water. This is the method I tried. While also changing the water at least once a week, with a lil splash of hydrogen peroxide. As the roots grow, I make sure they are still submerged in water. So far, this is been a good process for my marble queens and neon cuttings. It’s had quick steady progress over the last few weeks.

The trick to growing fast roots is temperature! Keep your cutting in well lit and warm spot. I keep mine in a green house at a constant 80F and they root way faster than the ones I have by my drawer since it’s colder in my room. Also don’t change your water just top it off when you notice the water level go down, there’s tons of beneficial stuff in the water to help root itself. Hope it helps!
