Hi! I’m planning to make about 6 moss poles for my climbing plants. Any advice or tips on material and building process. Would love to make it bendable and self watering if possible. I’ve got a basic idea of how to do it just want to hear from other people! Thanks!!
I used a piece of pex tubing and drilled tiny holes into it. Covered it in sphagnum moss and wrapped it on with fishing line. If you make it bigger it could be flexible but I water through the top of mine so gravity assists the “self watering” not sure how that would work with a bent arch.
Here’s a naked one. I hot glued the dowel in the bottom so water is trapped and only comes out the holes. (This one currently needs more holes towards the bottom)
Thank you so much!!! The holes definitely make more sense than some rope ideas I saw online. Should the moss be kept moist 24/7? Or should it be allowed to dry out?

0개 좋아요 I allow it to dry out. Larger pvc would work too but it’s not going to be flexible like pex, for an arched one

Kill This Plant has a great video tutorial on DIY moss poles if you’re okay with them not being bendable. Definitely my favorite of the DIY options by a long shot. If it’s for a monstera deliciosa, pretty much anything will work because the pole’s primary job is physical support. If it’s for something like a vining plant that will want roots in the pole, my biggest rec is to choose something you can water with an upside down water bottle, because the others tend to dry out FAST and are a massive pain to keep damp
좋아요 1개 Also I’d suggest having some hydrogen peroxide on hand. If you keep it consistently damp then you have a chance of mold, which won’t hurt the plant but looks gross. Watering the pole with a mix of peroxide and water will kill any fungus with a bonus of being good for the roots
