Hi everyone, I’ve been a plant mum now for a while and am considering buying my first Alocasia! I’m based in the U.K. and have heard from more experienced plant people that they’re difficult to keep alive ā˜¹ļø Can anyone give me any tips for keeping this baby alive if I was to purchase her?

They’re very thirsty and prone to dry rot, but they also need a lot of oxygen around their roots. I recommend either a chunky aroid mix with frequent waterings, or semihydro (pon/leca).

People have a lot of luck with semi hydro or pon with these I believe! Just alocasias in general seem to like it from what I’ve heard . Also, I think if you keep the water around 1/4 to 1/2 filled in the pot tray then it should be happy :) just change the water every couple of weeks and add a fertilizer to keep it happy . I use the ā€˜We The Wild’ brand and it’s the worm compost liquid concentration that they have . I’m not sure if it works with pon, but it does keep my soil plants happy! There’s tons of diff ones that are made for pon though so I recommend looking some reviews up! YouTube, Amazon, etc. Hope this helps :) also this is my dream plant šŸ«¶šŸ» lmao

Wild Fern on YouTube uses pon and I believe she has a video mentioning her pon mix and what she adds to the water to grow her plants!

Also one more thing LOL- if you don’t want to use pon, a chunky aroid soil and some food/fertilizer would do great too! I have all my alocasias in a DIY soil mix . (1/4 perlite, 1/4 orchid bark, 1/4 dry worm compost , 1/4 fox farm ocean floor soil.) and I use the We the Wild brand that I mentioned before for them. But best of luck with your plants!
