I got this alocasia cuprea today and this is the condition it was in. I noticed it’s pretty much the same damage as the new Polly I got from a different store last week however the soil seems a much better and airy mix than the Polly was in. I just replanted the Polly (actually discovered it was 2 of them) and saved the root system from the evil cloth of death that was still wrapped around the base. I’m going to wait on replanting this one as well but I found this big orange ball on top of the soil in the cuprea and the small white ones in the Polly. These are my first alocasia but I’ve seen online they make corms to reproduce, is that what these all are? I thought my Polly would be way too small to start a family and wouldn’t expect to find the cuprea having kids above soil level. The cuprea also looks to be 2 separate plants as well so maybe we’ll have to separate them as well.

    weird orange thing is not a corm, if it is a corm it's probably dead, but the other three definitely are corms. last one may not survive because it's too small but other two are good size. IMO you probably should separate, when i tried to have two alocasia in one pot one of them outcompeted the other. otherwise they all look healthy and fine, that damage seems to only be on one (or two?) leaf/ves so it's probably mechanical, wouldn't be too worried about it

      What do I do with the corms to give them the best chance? I’ve seen people with dedicated little plastic containers with a little bit of water then ignore them for months on end, then I’ve seen some people plant them a particular way and do a whole lot of maintenance to keep them happy. I don’t wanna murder my first ones 😅😅

      i typically leave them in the soil until they have one leaf, then move them, that's what gives me the most success but i've heard good things about sphagnum moss. just take an old tupperware and poke some holes in it with a needle, sphagnum wet but not dripping, and you close it and leave it in front of a window until it's big enough for a pot

    Photo is blurry, the 'orange' one could very well be a corm that still has its protective shell. I would not repot any alocasia until they are acclimated to your environment. When you do, expect leaves to drop. The pots you put your pollys in look awful large for the size plant it is, but hard to tell without seeing how large your root system is. Just remember to never let them dry out completely, and don't let them sit in water.

      Thankfully the roots on the Polly are actually pretty big. They were co planted in a 6 inch pot and when I divided them gently, the roots ended up being too large for a 4 inch pot so they went in to some clear 6 inch pots so I can monitor the roots and moisture better
