The Funstigator

My monster Alocasia After 2 years I finally got this girl to hold onto 3 leaves at a time and that’s where I’ve been for awhile. Until recently and now I’ve awaken a beast! I’m on my 3rd new leaf in 4 weeks. The first one is 29 inches long and 23 inches wide, the second to come in is 33 inches long and 23 inches wide. As you can see the 3rd is currently unfurling!

Removed all soil and put it straight in nutrient solution that is saturated with oxygen via an aquarium pump and air stone. This is how she looked before the move

She was getting heavy from all the huge new growth so I had to put her in a deeper pot so I could add more LECA to stabilizer and I was shocked at what I found when doing so

This is so much information. First of all, your plant is beautiful! Thanks for uploading the steps of growth or I would think the plant was fake! The root growth is impressive. Secondly, I’m hooked. I have a banana plant I want to grow in a south window to produce bananas. It produces them outside. But, cold weather always kills them before the fruit can generate enough sugar. He hydro method could boost the growth.

Oh ya, this is just the method to achieve your desired results! One key element not to be overlooked is the aquarium pump and air stone. Saturating the nutrient solution with oxygen is a surefire way to prevent root rot.

Attached to this but I wanted to dress it up and I couldn’t find a pendant ā€œshadeā€ by itself

So I had to buy this just for the ā€œshadeā€ large enough to fit over the bulb

My pleasure another very capable light is a Soltech aspect large copycat that I found. It is by far the most intense light I have come across. I took PPFD light readings and I don’t recall what they were but they were very high! The price is right at $66 compared to the $200 soltech price tag

Growing like this only occurred to me after a couple years of monitoring my nutrient solution strength and my light PPFD. Once I knew both of those were maxed out the only reason I could think of for the oldest leaf dying each time a new one came in was that my root system wasn’t large enough to consume enough nutrients to support the new growth. I actually was discussing this with a friend when it occurred to me and we have both enjoyed seeing my theory prove true. Super rewarding!
