SOS, alocasia peeps. These two were rescued from the clearance aisle after a freeze. They are in my converted greenhouse bathroom, 50 to 70% humidity, warm temperatures, receiving about 250 foot candles of light. The photos show when I first got them, versus today. Did they go dormant? Or are they dying? When I first got them, I did check their roots, which were actually very healthy, so I’m hoping this is dormancy. But of all my alocasias, black velvet and Melos hate me the most 🫠 so I’m not sure. Thoughts?

Did you repot them right away? I feel like maybe they got too many changes at once and just got overwhelmed? Also 250 foot candles seems a bit low, usually my go to for rescues is to turn up the light and humidity as much as possible and then not water until they’re all the way dry even for alocasia-just for the first time. Alocasia are awesome in that even if they lose all their leaves they can come back from their “corm” state sometimes.

Yes, they needed to be removed from their cold, wet soil. I put them in a perlite soil 50-50 mix and inspected the roots. Thank you! I scooted them closer to the light, so they’re closer to 400 foot candles now.

Okay yeah sounds like you couldn’t avoid reporting asap that totally makes sense and you did everything right.

I believe they went dormant because of the freeze. If temps drop below 60-65° F it causes alocasias to go dormant. I would cut the stems off and only water when the soil is dry. Wait for them to grow in the spring, they will come back.
