Please help!! I woke up to my plant having spots like water is trapped!! I am a New plant parent and bought this new plant two days ago, not knowing I was harming my plant I sprayed it DOWN with neem oil and washed with dawn soap and insecticidal soap! The leafs were sticking to one another after so I washed it off with warm water and used paper towel to dry it and left next to small fan on low. I read that I essentially burned it and the water is trapped. In two days it went from so beautiful to looking like this!!! Can someone tell me if now my plant is done? What can I do to help it? Will the water leave the leafs? Should I cut the good healthy leaf to propagate? Please help! Your help would be much appreciated! And boy did I learn a $25 lesson! I hope I didn’t kill it!

    I think you can just cut off the leaf, the plant is perfectly fine otherwise just now you know not to do that again!

    Don’t do anything! Your plant can absolutely survive this but you will need to be gentle with it. Here are a few things I think will help you and your beautiful plant. Chopping: Do not cut off any leaves unless they are greatly discolored and fall off with a gentle touch. They are how the plant will recover and if the leaves die the plant can reabsorb the nutrients in the leaves. The spots are likely oedema - they look a bit ugly but don’t cause any damage. If you want to take cuttings to propagate, try to wait until it has a good bit of healthy, new growth (like maybe 4-5 nodes) first if you can. If you take a cutting now it will be relying on an unhealthy leaf to do all the work to grow, which greatly reduces your chance of a healthy plant growing from it. I have done it but the plants are never as vibrant, even when they are older. Light: Even if you got all the stuff you sprayed on its leaves off, you will almost certainly have stripped some of the surface of the lead off too, which means any light on it could be magnified. It needs to be in slightly lower light than you would normally keep it in for a week or two as it recovers and then slowly move it to its regular light spot. Air Flow: Don’t put a fan facing on the leaf as it can interfere with transpiration and basically prevent it from breathing. Air flow is important though, so having an oscillating fan in a corner of the room works well. Or you can simply face the fan you have so the air gently bounces off a wall behind the plant or face the fan towards the ceiling near the plant. I have a complicated setup but I do this last one and it’s very effective with a 12cm hard drive style fan I got from Temu. Water: Be careful with watering. We tend to overwater when we are worried about our plants and we end up creating a new problem. Philodendrons are remarkably resilient (as are most plants actually). I highly recommend clear pots as you can see problems and growth more easily, but don’t repot until you see at least one or two healthy new leaves (that’s how you’ll know it’s recovering well). Stick a finger in the top of the pot, when the top inch it dry, you water. Sprays: Never spray a velvet leaf plant with anything unless you have a pest problem and it is life or death. They hold droplets that magnify light so it can burn and make the perfect home for fungus. Generally you only spray for two reasons: foliage fertilizer and pest control. You only spray after the light is out at the end of the day (whether you rely on the sun or grow lights) so it absorbs over night. (If what you’re wanting it to add humidity, clustering plants together and using a humidifier are the best ways I found but nothing will work as well as a greenhouse style enclosed environment but watch for mold). Quarantine: The most important thing with a new plant is to keep it away from other plants in your collection for at least one month but two is better. You need enough time to see any pests which means waiting out their breeding cycles which is longer than you might expect as they can vary based on conditions. You also want to tend to your new plant after you have tended to your existing plants. This ensure any pests it may have aren’t transferred as the little demons can be great hitchhikers! Most importantly: Give yourself a break! You were clearly trying to ensure you took care of your plant and prevented any issues it might have. This plant care thing is a continuous learning curve. Take my advice (and anyone else’s) with a pinch of salt as it is based on our conditions and plants which is quite specific. Good luck!
