Cuttings in water

Propagating plants in water is an easy and popular way to grow new plants from cuttings. Many common houseplants root well in water and can stay there until they’ve developed strong roots and are ready to be planted in soil - or in some cases continue growing in water.

Some things to consider

  • Make sure the plant you’re taking cuttings from can root in water. Suitable propagation media are listed when selecting the propagation option in the app.

  • Use clean scissors or pruning shears when taking your cutting to avoid introducing bacteria.

  • Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line. Leaves in water can rot and affect the cutting.

  • Make sure the container or vase is clean before placing the cutting in it.

  • If you use a transparent container, avoid placing it in direct sunlight. Strong sun can overheat the water and stress the cutting.

Water changes

Cuttings root best in clean, fresh water. To prevent bacteria buildup, it’s important to change the water regularly.

  • Carefully lift the cutting out of the container.

  • Pour out the old water.

  • Rinse and clean the container.

  • Refill it with fresh, room-temperature water.

  • Place the cutting back in the container, ensuring the node (where roots grow from) is submerged.

  • You don’t need to add fertilizer while the cutting is developing roots. Once it has established a strong root system, you can move it to soil or consider very diluted nutrients if keeping it in water long-term.
