How to care for Angel Wings (Caladium bicolor)

Origin

Caladium bicolor, also known as Angel Wings, is a beautiful tropical perennial known for its vibrantly colored and patterned foliage.

They're native to Central and South America, where they are adapted to live in hot, humid conditions in dappled sunlight. If kept indoors, they'll need a spot with ample bright, indirect light.

Angel Wings are part of the Araceae family - the same family as the Peace Lily.

They can grow quite large, up to 30 inches (76 cm) tall, and each leaf can be as big as your hand! Additionally, their spread can be almost as wide as they are tall, so they make a striking accent plant in your home.

Care

Angel Wings are treasured for their foliage, but these paper-thin leaves can be quite sensitive. They're not at all frost tolerant, so be sure to keep the temperatures warm and protect your plant from the winter chill.

These are seasonal plants, growing their foliage during the spring and summer months and then hibernating as temperatures get colder in fall and winter, so don't be alarmed when your Angel Wings starts to wither! This is totally normal and will happen even when the plant is given the best possible care. When the leaves wither down in autumn, you can cut off the stems and leaves and then reduce watering until spring.

To keep your plant extra happy, try to maintain a warm temperatures in your home and high humidity too. You may need to boost the humidity by regularly misting and / or using a pebble tray.

They also like bright, indirect light - too much harsh direct light can damage the leaves.

Other

Caladiums come in a number of different colors and patterns depending on the specific variety. Colors include pinks, reds, whites and greens, and patterns can vary from veined or striped to mottled.

Unfortunately, Angel Wings (and other Caladiums) are toxic to both humans and animals, so make sure to keep them out of reach of pets and children.
