What are seedlings?
After a seed germinates, it enters the seedling stage, the plant’s first real step into the world. It’s small, delicate, and just getting started. The seedlings will first grow a set of basic leaves called cotyledons - they often look round or heart-shaped. These aren't the plant's true leaves but act like a starter pack to help it begin photosynthesis (turning light into energy).

What do seedlings need to grow?
Light
Give them lots of bright, indirect light. If indoors, a grow light may help prevent weak or “leggy” growth.Water
Keep the soil slightly moist but not wet. Overwatering is one of the easiest ways to harm a seedling.Airflow
Good air circulation helps prevent mold and damping off (a disease that can kill seedlings suddenly).Temperature
Keep the seedling in a stable, warm place, avoid cold drafts or sudden changes.
What happens during the seedling stage?
The plant begins to grow upwards and develop a stem.
The first leaves, called cotyledons, develop first. The plant’s true leaves appear after the cotyledons, marking the beginning of the vegetative stage.
Roots are growing deeper and wider underground to support future growth.
The seedling becomes more dependent on light, water, and airflow.
