Grow plants from Seed or Cuttings

We’re excited to introduce Seeds and Propagation in Planta - a new way to follow plants from their earliest stages of life.

You can now track their journey starting from seed or cutting, and follow their development as they grow into mature plants.

Start a Plant from Seed

Planta will guide you through the plant’s growth stages as it develops. As the plant grows, it will move through stages such as, Seed, Seedling, Vegetative growth, Flowering or Fruiting

Care guidance and tasks will adapt depending on the stage your plant is currently in.

When your plant reaches the harvest stage, Planta will notify you. You can then mark the plant as harvested in the app.

This makes it easier to follow the full lifecycle of plants that produce harvestable crops.

How to Start a Plant from Seed

  1. Tap Add plant and search for the plant you want to grow, for example basil.

  2. When adding the plant, choose the stage you are starting from, such as Seed, Seedling, Young vegetative, Vegetative, Flowering, or Fruiting.

  3. Follow the setup steps

  4. Once the plant has been added to your collection, you can open the plant profile to see information about each growth stage and what to look for as the plant develops.

  5. When a stage is completed, you can activate the next stage. When the plant reaches the harvest stage, a Harvest button will appear so you can log when you harvest from the plant.

  6. When the plant has completed its lifecycle, you can end the propagation in the last step and the plant will return to the default vegetative stage in Planta.

Track Propagation and Cuttings

You can also track plants that are grown through propagation. You can start a plant from a cutting or take a cutting from an existing plant

When a cutting is added, you can follow it through the early propagation stage until it becomes an established plant.

Take a Cutting from an existing plant

  1. Open the plant profile of the plant you want to take a cutting from.

  2. Tap the plus (+) button and select Propagate.

  3. Choose the type of cutting and the growing medium.

  4. In the site selection, you can decide whether to place the plant in one of your sites or gift the cutting to someone else.

Add a Cutting

  1. Tap Add plant and search for the plant.

  2. If the plant supports propagation, you can select that you are starting from a cutting in the add plant flow

  3. Choose the type of cutting and follow the setup steps.

  4. Once the plant has been added to your collection, you can open the plant profile to see information about each stage and what to look for as the plant develops.

Note that not all plants support propagation when adding a new plant.

Change an existing plant to a Cutting

If you already have a plant in your collection that should be tracked as a cutting, you can change the stage manually.

  1. Open the plant profile.

  2. Tap Settings in the top right corner.

  3. Select Plant stage.

  4. Change the stage to Cutting.

See the Plant’s Lineage

With propagation, you can also see the lineage of your plants. Which plant the cutting came from, how many times a plant has been propagated and how many plants it has resulted in.

This allows you to see how plants in your collection are connected and how they grow across generations.

Follow the Full Plant Journey

Seeds and propagation add a new way to experience plant care in Planta.

You can now follow plants through more of their lifecycle - from seed or cutting, through growth and development, and all the way to harvest.

Ofte stillede spørgsmål

What are the growth stages for a plant started from seed?

When starting from seed, a plant typically progresses through stages like Seed, Seedling, Vegetative growth, Flowering, or Fruiting. Care guidance adjusts according to the plant's current stage.

How do I track a new plant that I started from a cutting?

To track a plant from a cutting, you can add it by searching for the plant and selecting 'cutting' as its starting stage. You will then choose the cutting type and follow the setup steps to add it to your collection.

Can I convert an existing plant in my collection to a cutting?

Yes, you can manually change an existing plant to a cutting by opening its profile, tapping Settings, selecting Plant stage, and choosing 'Cutting'.

What kind of lineage information is available for propagated plants?

For propagated plants, you can view their lineage, seeing which plant the cutting originated from, how many times a plant has been propagated, and the total number of plants it has produced.
