Grew this Hawaiian papaya from seeds (from one i bought at a grocery store and ate). Had 7 seedlings but only this one survived a repotting effort. So, I live in a condo, with balconies, zone 10b, and I grew these indoors just under my plant grow lights with the other houseplants. But now this little guy is 4 ft tall and I want to plan for its future. I don’t have ground to plant it in. I could: - Repot and get a taller grow light (I have a high ceiling area of the condo) - Sell? - Dwarf it but I’m not experienced - also it needs a few buddies if it has any hope of fruiting, I think there have to be a mixture of male/female for this tree If I really want to keep it I should sprout another batch of seeds, repot, more lights, go all in I suppose. Just wanting a reality check here.

    hawaiian papaya are hermaphroditic! they can self pollinate, so you actually only need this one. i think repot and raise the grow light is your best bet here if putting it on the balcony isn't an option. i've seen people have trouble getting them to fruit when they're young like this, so if it flowers this year you should probably just cut the buds off. flowers take a huge amount of energy from the plant, and a tree of this size won't give you fruit good enough to be worth the hassle.

    I agree with the comment above. I will add a lot of people ( as much as cheating as it seems) graft fruit bearing trees to an older plant of some sort, to trick the plant into thinking it’s older and causing it to start bearing fruit years earlier. Just some food for thought ☺️
