The APP recommended i remove suckers from my tomato plants ~ Is there a ratio or magic formula so too many aren’t removed which could hurt the plants? How does this look to the group?

    It’s a been a while since I grew tomatoes. I would remove the suckers after the plant starts flowering. We took out the suckers below the lowest flowering branch. This was roughly 1/3 of the plant. I noticed you have several plants in a pot inside one cage. I only put in one plant to avoid overcrowding. Tomato plants get big. Overcrowding can lead to low light and poor air circulation. The fruit will become deformed and small. Low air flow lead to mold and other fungus build up on the leaves particularly after rains or watering. I recommend giving each plant a pot of its one. You can cut and plant the stems deep in the soil after removing the excess leaves. Add rooting hormone to get late season tomatoes from the props. You can propagate the suckers too. 🪴🍀🍅

    Thank you ~ Only one plant we purchased at farmers market but maybe when i potted it below the soil line deep in the pot, it grew “suckers” that now look like multiple plants in there?

    With pruning, the general rule is to remove no more than 1/3 of the plant. That said, most highly domesticated plants like veggies and roses can handle being pruned back a lot more than average plants. For tomatoes you could easily get away with half if you feel a need to do it
