Farmer Al’s Garden

Good afternoon all, I had planted my blackberry plant last December and it was flowering & producing fruit consistently. Now it’s striving in growth but not flowering, it’s in direct full time sunlight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏽. My neighbor bought the same one, same day and still has hers in the original pot and it’s flowering and producing blackberries daily but not growing so it’s definitely not out of season.     It could be getting too much nitrogen that nourishes the branches and leaves, but, doesn’t promote blooms needed for fruiting. Lawn fertilizer can be a culprit. Also, the bush may be competing with the weeds for nutrients. Potted plants don’t have these issues. That could be the reason your neighbor’s plant is fruiting well. I recommend adding a fertilizer that promotes blooms after clearing out the grass and weeds around the base. Put down a weed block or mulch to block the weeds. 🍀🪴

    Blackberries will not fruit on new growth until the following year. This may be one of the reasons why. Once the growth hardens and gets bark it will fruit the following year. Because of this they tend to alternate between growth focused and fruit focused years. But I would also say to mulch around it, and make sure the soil is right for it.
