   if you live in the midwest, literally just throw seeds or a whole pumpkin in a garden bed or dirt outside in the spring. needs a lot of room to vine out but other than that will grow itself by the fall.

   Good news: they're super easy. Bad news: they're huge plants (plan ahead for their expected full size or you will be overrun by too much pumpkin vine). So, starting with seeds you'd sow in may-june (in cold areas you can start them indoors and move them after about a month.) Plant 2-3 seeds per hole and thin out the weaker ones as they sprout. Water them in, and water anywhere from once a week to daily depending on how fast summer heat is drying the soil. Arrange the vines as they grow in to help keep them tidy. As pumpkins grow in, turn them occasionally to keep them in good condition. Pumpkins can be harvested when their color is even, they make a hollow sound when tapped, their stems turn dry and brittle, their skin is tough enough to not be damaged with a fingernail, and the vines and leaves start dying back. If you have a pumpkin right now and intend to save the seeds, scoop them out, wash them in water until the pulp comes off, and select the largest seeds for planting. Dry them in sunlight, flipping them occasionally to get both sides, for a few weeks. Then store them in a paper container for next year
