I don’t know where the spearmint comes from in my garden. I see them often growing near random bushes and even in cracked that are in my roadway. I ate it and it’s edible.

    Mint acts like a weed easily spreading underground. It only takes an inch of vine to grow a plant. It’s better raised in a pot on concrete where it can’t grow out of drain holes into the yard. I recommend digging it out to keep potted or eradicate it before it spreads. Dig out all the underground vines like you’re searching the soil for gold nuggets. We had to dig all the soil and dump on concrete. We picked through all the soil to find the runners before filling the holes. It would pop up again a few weeks later because a tiny piece was in the soil. I could not use herbicides because of young children/pets. 🪴🍀

      I babysit kids that enjoy eating most of the mint leaves I grow. I don’t remember ever having spearmint grow but that explains it. It also explains why one of the mint bushes I have is spreading a lot.

      I love mint. I used to grow several varieties (chocolate, sweet, peppermint, spearmint, etc) along with several basil varieties. I used them in recipes and teas. I only grow one in a pot. Too busy. I’m afraid of it in the garden because of the spread. They choked out all the other plants in the garden bed. I recommend keeping it in check. Mine dies back each winter. It’s in an 18” pot.

      Wow! It’s very lovely. I do try to keep it in check but I think it’s very cool when it spreads. Only problem is the pests and bugs. Some of the leaves die in the winter but a lot of them survived this winter.
