Hi there! I have zero green thumbs and have killed many a plant, cactus and air plant in my day. But my passion to grow a small edible garden with my girls for our family is enormous. All I can recall from gardening with my Dad as a kid is watering, weeding and miracle grow. We have two raised beds in back that need some love. I can weed, but don’t know what else to do to start. I believe I should be planting seeds soon, but would love any suggestions or recommendations of how-to videos or websites to help. I know we will need new topsoil, but how much and how deep? I hope to grow any of the following: melon, bell peppers, poblano peppers, potatoes, carrots, strawberries, radishes, green onions, zucchini, cucumbers, and/or tomatoes. However, I also don’t know when to start planting or which veggies play nice together. I think we live in zone 5? It’s currently still in the 30s-60s. I am a very visual and hands-on learner, Please help.

My family and I watch Garden answer on YouTube. They have some pretty useful tips. Hope this helps!

I would start with herbs, a lot of the plants you listed take a while to grow and require lots of care such as the melon, tomatoes, and strawberries. This is just my opinion but carrots and radishes tend to be a hit or miss so I don’t grow them. Green onions, cucumbers, and zucchini’s are some good plants to start with and grow like crazy. I also recommend growing rosemary, dill, basil, and mint as they are very hardy and help with cooking. Just be careful about mint and keep it away from the other plants because it will take over, I speak from experience lol. Hope this helped!

You can do it! I’ve found that a lot of gardening is trial and error while you’re learning 😉 As a beginner, I would recommend probably buying some of the plants as seedlings (I still buy tomato plants and I’ve gardened for a long time). Starting from seed and be pretty disappointing when you’re learning as they don’t all thrive. Eventually you’ll learn to be cool with the losses but it can be hard at first. Radishes are an exception! They spring up so fast and are a great joy to grow from seed. They are a cool loving plant so if you get a seed pack it will tell you approximately when you can sow into the ground. For preparing your bed - I started mine with a mixture of top soil, peat moss, compost, and worm castings. Then each year I add a bag of worm castings to the soil and turn it all in. Finally, I planted my strawberries next to my raised bed and pretty much ignore them. They get a bit of residual care from the veggie garden but absolutely thrive! That’s the picture I attached. The strawberries are on the right. I plant herbs on the left side. We have to keep it tight because we live in a townhouse. Like I said- you all can do this! Have fun and celebrate your successes!!!!
