Hi there, our tomato š plant is starting to look out of control. Iām new to growing edible plants, Iād appreciate any help or tips on how to prune this. Thank you all!!

Idk what variety that is but if itās a determinate variety you need a tomato cage if itās indeterminate you may want to look into other trellising methods. also that pot looks a tad too small, but admittedly Iāve never grown tomatoes in containers

Succulentā¤ļøMamaI also grow tomatoes in containers and thatās about the size pots I use. Tomatoes are crawling plants by nature so we have to do things to stake them upright. I use a tomato cage and by the end of the year I am tying the cage to a t-post to keep it upright. I usually also have vines that grow out of the top and around like crazy so I usually end up tying those to the outside of the cage.š¤£ Pinching or cutting the suckers when you can also helps tame it. The suckers are the mini plants that grow between the leaf and main stem. If you leave those, they become more main stems and it just gets to be pure chaos.š It doesnāt hurt the plant, it just depends how much room you have available for that plant.

I donāt have all the tomato cages up right now, but this is how far apart I space my plants.

Iām just trying to help out a fellow gardener. Not all tomato plants vine, there is a difference between determinant and indeterminate varieties. Determinate ones require a cage or steaks to remain upright, but only get a certain height hence determinate. Indeterminate tomatoes are the Vining and they will grow as tall as they want. The part about suckersis opposite, if you cut the suckers off it directs more energy to the main stem, which makes the plant grow taller. You can do that and indeterminate tomatoes. Happy gardening.

Indeterminate on a 12 foot lattice. I totally expect it to climb that high

Determinate that will only grow about 4-5 feet tall.

SnowstormYou can use poles and soft ties too. Mine is a determinate tomatoe so it wonāt work in a cage so I used poles. Hereās an old pic but theyāre putting out tomatoes like wooooah! The poles are about 6ā and itās a 42L pot. Currently the toms are about 4.5ā tall.
