Just wanted to share this because I’m so excited. I’ve killed the Roma tomato plants I get every year, but this one has THRIVED. I tried companion planting and I haven’t had a single problem with aphids this year which has killed my plants in the past. In the pot with the tomato is a sweet basil, cinnamon basil and sugar snap peas. 🥰 I’m hoping it starts producing tomatoes soon!
I just potted my golden harvest tomato seedlings into pots outside. Can you tell me more about companion planting? I hear tomato’s are easy to die by pests. I also have a healthy Meyer lemon tree near my tomato’s and I don’t want those being cross contaminated just in case. Thanks!
0개 좋아요 I’m not an expert on it, but from what I’ve researched companion planting is planting plants together that are beneficial for each other. I chose the basils because their scent kind of hides plants from pests like aphids. The sugar snap peas put nitrogen into the soil which the tomato needs. They’re also shallow rooted which makes sure they aren’t taking too much room in the pot since tomatoes have large root systems. Another good one is nasturtiums. I’m planning on putting a hanging basket above the tomatoes with some in there. I think they also keep aphids away and they’re edible and pretty. I also have some strawberry plants that I planted with marigolds since they also keep pests off. So far it seems to be working. I haven’t found a single pest in my garden, just a few spiders which are welcome to chill on my plants. 😊

0개 좋아요 I have a mosquito plant outside sitting between my 2 tomato plants and my 1 lemon tree. Do you think this is enough to do the trick or would you still recommend the companion planting?
0개 좋아요 I’m not as familiar with Citronella plants. I just looked it up and it looks like they can help mask the scent of plants too and keep aphids away. Not sure about other pests. Also another thing to consider if you plant basil near tomatoes it can change their taste, but from what I’ve read it’s not necessarily a bad thing, but if you’re worried about that I would look up how they can alter the taste.
0개 좋아요 Really I would just do some research on good companion plants for tomatoes and what they help with to see if there’s something that you think your tomato might need. My biggest concern was aphids because that was what killed my tomatoes every year, so I focused on those when I chose what to plant with them this year.

2개 좋아요I wanna plant a early girl tomato plant with basil and marigolds all in the same 22 inch pot but I don’t know how many if anyone has any suggestions
0개 좋아요 I’d have to check how big my pot is, but as long as there is enough space in the pot between each plant, it should be good. When I looked up about marigold spacing it mentioned 12 inches of space between it and the tomato plant. Basil needs less room, about 3-4 inches. I just put the basil a few inches away from the outside rim of the pot. It’s really all about giving the tomato roots enough room to grow. They’ll take up the most space in the pot. You’ll want to make sure the pot is at least 5 gallon to give the tomato roots enough room to grow down.
좋아요 1개I have my tumbler tomato plant in a large pot and my two strawberry plants in medium pots. I put my two basil plants which are in small pots between the strawberries & tomatoes and I’m hoping that’s enough to keep the pests away 🤞🤷🏼♀️
