When you live in a city, and you live on a street where your house gets little to no morning Sun, but plenty of afternoon Sun, it becomes difficult to grow many things. Most plants love and need morning Sun in order to establish and bloom. Because of that I stay away from “needs time to grow” types of plants. Tomato’s are a summer favorite no matter where you are. And there are so many options of tomato’s and tomato plants to choose from. For myself the cherry tomato is always the best choice to make. If I want a sandwich with tomatoes then I just halve a few cherry tomatoes and place them on the sandwich. If I want a tomato onion salad, or any summer salad with tomatoes then I leave them whole or slice them up. One “ready to go” cherry tomato plant, no short starter plant, will produce about 5 to 10 small baskets of tomatoes from May until November. Every morning its soil gets soaked because every afternoon, while tied to my front door railing, there will be 100% scorching sun. This is the 5th year, maybe 6th, where I grow food on my Philadelphia sidewalk. I also do bell peppers this way. Public: Aren’t you worried someone will steal? Me: I do not live in fear worrying about people who are hungry or homeless stealing to feed themselves. While the plat is bungee corded to the railing, that is to prevent the wind from storms from blowing it over. Public: I wish I could do that at my place. Me: Why can’t you? Why haven’t you? Just do it. You may have others do the same thing. If Property manager or apartment managers say it’s a no no, after you’ve already placed a plant, then ask them where the plant(s) can go to help residents with food costs. After all the local press like to hear of good stories versus bad stories.
