What works for me is appropriate sun, bed prep and picking varieties that have proven success in your area. All will want full sun for best yield. I like to add a healthy amount of compost and manure to the bed before planting. Check local nurseries or your local agricultural extension office. They should be able to let you know which work best for your area. A little trick with tomatoes - remove all the lower leaves but the top three or four. Plant deep, so that the top leaves are an inch or so above the soil. Tomatoes have the neat trick that they can produce roots along the stem. Planting deeper gives the plant an opportunity to produce more roots. Also, the bigger the fruit, the more the sun they will need. I have a shadier lot so I like cherry tomatoes. Jalapeños are pretty easy. Similar sun requirements as tomatoes. I like to train my cucumbers on a trellis to save space. Keep them watered or they can get bitter. And pick while small so they are more tender. I don’t have much experience with watermelons. They want a lot of space. Plant on in mound and give plenty of water. Bells hate me so hopefully someone else will chime.
