Newbie here in zone 8! I planted potatoes about 3 weeks ago, and still have no green tops. I only topped with soil enough to cover the seed potatoes with plans to hill up as the tops sprout. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Anything I could have done wrong?
I'm Zone 8 as well 👋 and planted thriving potato plants by accident. I had no idea they were there, then one day they started sprouting and grew rapidly from there. It didn't take off until we hit the hot summer months, which I believe are still a ways away. It may not be hot enough for them yet.

0 LikesThat's what I would do! How much sun are they getting? Ours were in afternoon sun and really started to thrive once we were getting daily rainstorms... probably around late April. They were ready to harvest around mid-June once the leaves all started yellowing, almost browning. Give them a little more time, moist soil, and sunshine. I did just re-read your original message and you may not have planted them deep enough. They need to be about 3-4 inches down.
1 Like They are in afternoon sun, but the tops of the seed potatoes are just beneath the soil, so I may need to add more! Thank you!!
