Name: Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Description: Oregano is a perennial herb that typically grows up to 2-3 feet / 60-90 cm in height. It features small, oval-shaped leaves that are dark green in color. The leaves have a slightly fuzzy texture and a distinct, pungent aroma. Taste: The taste of oregano is strong, slightly bitter, and peppery, with a hint of sweetness. It is a crucial ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine and is known for enhancing the flavors of various dishes. History: Oregano was used extensively in ancient Greece, where it was believed to have medicinal properties. The name "oregano" is derived from the Greek words "oros" (mountain) and "ganos" (joy), highlighting its prevalence in mountainous regions. Scientific Finds: Studies have shown that oregano contains compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties make oregano beneficial for supporting immune health and potentially aiding in the prevention of certain diseases. How to Care for It: - Sunlight: Oregano thrives in sunny locations, needing at least 6h+ of direct sunlight per day. - Soil: Oregano prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil with a slightly alkaline to neutral pH (6.0-8.0). - Watering: Water oregano when the top inch of soil is dry, allowing good drainage and avoiding waterlogged roots. - Pruning: Regular pruning encourages bushy growth; pinch or cut the stems to stimulate new growth and maintain a compact shape. Uses: - Aromatherapy: Oregano essential oil is used in aromatherapy for its soothing and calming properties. It is believed to help relieve stress and anxiety. - Culinary: Oregano is a staple herb in Mediterranean cuisine, especially in Italian, Greek, and Spanish dishes. It is used to flavor a variety of foods, including pizza, pasta, soups, and sauces. - Health and Wellness: Apart from its culinary uses, oregano is valued for its potential health benefits. It may aid in digestion, relieve respiratory issues, and possess antimicrobial properties. - Gardening: Oregano is a valuable addition to any herb garden. It attracts beneficial insects, making it a great companion plant. It is relatively easy to grow and can be propagated through cuttings or by dividing existing plants.

I adore oregano! Of all the herbs I’ve grown, I find it to be the most well behaved and yet it still provides ample harvest. And fun bonus, the bees love it! They are always working my plants. Such a joy in the garden.

I love it. I buy several varieties each spring: Mexican, French, Greek, Cuban, Italian and common.
