I have this jalapeño plant and some of the jalapeños are turning red, but they’re still really small :(. Should I pick them now or wait for them to get bigger?

    Sounds like stressful plant conditions? My parents pepper plants (carolina reaper, but roughly the same care) thrive best in a greenhouse where water is present in the air more, and they have the best, warmest conditions. Think equator type heat and humidity in that greenhouse. If your pepper plant is an outdoor plant, and if you’ve been experiencing the rapid changes in temp and weather like the south-east coast had been, it’s likely just stressed out and trying to ripen the fruits early!

      Problems could range anywhere from overwatering and underwatering (lol, typical), OVERLY intense heat or sun, sunscald, or maybe a nutrient deficiency. Sounds like your pepper feels like it’s stressed out and is trying to seed early by ripening its fruit in preparation.

      Yeah I live in Texas so it’s been a scorcher this summer and it’s only getting hotter. The rest of the peppers look fine it’s just that one

      Might be a one time occurrence if your weather gets back to normal then! You should be good to pick it and hope for the best with all your other peppers! 💛

    In my experience once the peppers start to turn red they won’t grow any larger. For maximum spiciness, you want to pick them while they’re still firm and have reached their final colour (the package should show this). You can pick them as they start to turn red and they’ll continue to turn red on the counter top but won’t get any spicier.
