I've had this thanksgiving cactus for about 3 years and it's never bloomed. I recently in the last month or so decided to put it under a grow light to see if it would do better cause I don't have much natural light in my house. I also decided to repot and give fresh soil. Now I'm thinking my pot is too big...should I get a different pot? When I took the cactus out of its original pot, the soil was soaked...lots of fibrous roots around the edges. I also used miracle grow cactus potting soil and added some perlite. Is this okay, is my pot too big? I literally just repotted yesterday and am having second thoughts about how I did this.

I would say leave it so you’re not stressing it out even further. It does need light so hopefully that will help!

i don’t think you sized up inappropriately as long as the roots were filling the old pot! rule of thumb is 1/2” bigger than the previous one, and it looks like you’ve done that ☺️ now regarding the soil…. miracle gro is notorious for staying moist for too long, which makes plants prone to rotting and pests. i’d recommend switching to another brand if you can! adding the perlite will help, but keep this in mind if you notice your cactus staying too wet for too long! someone may surely know better than i, but i think it will be okay! i would def not repot so soon. keep it under the grow light and give it some time to adjust, you might just get some blooms ☺️

Ok well that makes me feel a little bit better! I will let it go for awhile and see how it does. Im still learning about the different soils to use and such. I think I'm going to start making my own mix.

Completely agree! It’s all a learning process, I have mine in the sun gro, which is pretty comparable to the miracle gro. I just make sure I’m testing the soil before watering. Someone mentioned this in a different post but in the future these guys really like the terra cotta/stoneware pots as they can wick some moisture too!

I used miracle grow soil for all my plants and as long as you added perlite it should be fine. I have too many plants to afford expensive potting mix. Have you been fertilizing it? I use Neptunes fish & seaweed and they seem to like it. Last year starting in October I would cover mine at 6pm and then uncovered at 8am and do this for a couple weeks and it will trigger the buds 😊

I will try that. I have fertilized it with a liquid fertilizer. Haven't recently though. I had this pot just lying around so figured I would use it instead of buying one. I have a ton of plants too and already have spent so much money this summer on them lol!

Disclaimer: No plants were harmed on purpose in this segment. I do not claim to be an expert in good plant health. I am pretty good though at screwing up good plant health. Hello. The young lady in the photo we call Miss Ryan. She is from a larger more mature plant that a friend of mine has. In 2021 my friend gave me 3 cut leaves from the more mature Mrs. Ryan and I brought them home to plant. After a week in my inner blazer pocket, because I forgot they were there, I planted them, and they thrived. They thrived until I started repotting, and rescuing from repotting. Miss Ryan again thrived until repotting and rescuing from repotting. And right now I’m NOT doing a rescue repotting. Is she drying out? - Ohhh yes. Is she looking withered? Need water? - Yes withered for some of her tentacles. And yes she could use some water but she isn’t getting any. Have I had to surgically remove tentacles that were dead at the dirt level but had green outwards? - Yes and I’ve repotted those and spray them daily. No water yet. Miss Ryan here, and cactus like her, are so sensitive to change. The only time a living thing has been more annoyed and sensitive is when a person with a prickly-heat rash, covering their entire torso and legs, was walking while wearing a full body eco friendly outfit made of sandpaper, for their NY Met Gala photo op, and their bestie tells them Bennifer is going to give it a third try. So take it from Disney and just… Let it go. Let it go. Let it sit & do nothing While you go. Now if I’d just follow my own advice all would be right with the world. At least my tiny corner of the padded room would be good.

Shouldn’t be a problem as long as it has drainage holes. There’s a misconception that big pots kill succulents but it’s actually that people don’t give them enough time to dry out completely as it will take longer which leads to soggy soil. Your pot looks fine, although I suggest filling it up higher next time so all the plant can reach more light. They’ll bloom with 3000 foot candles for 8 hours a day but with less than that it will be too dark for them to grow

I'm kinda confused about the foot candle thing. The grow light I have is 10watt LED...so if I'm doing my math right, that's no where near bright enough for this cactus, correct? I moved it to my front door but I don't know how to measure that...it's south facing though so it gets pretty good light all day. I really want to get it to bloom...do you think it's fine by the front door or should I get a stronger grow light? Or what about putting it outside for awhile...I heard doing that when the weather changes will encourage it to bloom too...

Another thing though, I was worried it was getting too much light from the grow light because the tips were turning purple as well.

The wattage doesn’t always relate to how much light it emits. Like sansi’s two head grow lights which I have (10w per head) equates to around foot candles when used together. Your best bet is to use a light metre or check the light specification/ask the manufacturer of yours (usually provided in lumen/lux). I think a stronger grow light would be better since cactus don’t always cope well in rain/cold conditions and the weather in the UK is often only bright enough on a very hot day

They’re supposed to turn purple. Succulents remain green and change colour when their light levels are nice and bright, so that doesn’t mean it’s being sunburnt just that it has got enough light from it. It’s only if the tips start to shrivel up or turn brown/black that it would indicate too much sun!

Well I went ahead and moved by my front door where it gets natural bright light and it already has buds for flowers since I repotted and moved it! Yay!!

I started feeding all of my succulents with this fertilizer. It is so easy just 1-2 pumps per pot. All my succulents and cacti have responded well
