CRAZY

Hello everyone!! I know this post is a bit late with it almost being Christmas/ Hanukah! (Happy holidays). But, during this time of year you are very likely to see ā€œChristmasā€ cacti this time of year!! But, most of these Christmas cacti are NOT Christmas cacti at all! Most are actually Thanksgiving cacti. As a ✨pro✨ at Christmas cacti it drives me nuts to see a thanksgiving cactus on display labeled as a Christmas cacti. Don’t fall victim to this!!

Oh my gosh, this sort of thing has always bugged me. I often wonder how much of this is laziness on the part of the nurseries and how much is intentional to market to consumers. Maybe a bit of both? Also interesting to note that Easter cactus is an entirely different genus!

Yes I saw that too about the Easter cacti! But they are often still lumped together with Christmas cacti and thanksgiving cacti becouse Easter is considered a holiday by most. So they were all just put together in one group ā€œthe holiday cactiā€ Soo creative 🤣

Plant labeling drives me nuts. How are there no regulations? And some plants have NO label at all! It's like going to a spice rack at a grocery store, seeing a jar of unlabeled brown powder, and not knowing if it's cinnamon or nutmeg... šŸ™„

You could always sniff the brown powder to tell the difference.

šŸ˜‚ my mind just went to people sniffing plants that don’t have flowers or labels. When someone asks what they’re doing, they say, ā€œI’m trying figure out what plant this is.ā€

So the easiest difference to spot is that the thanksgiving cactus leaves (if that’s what they are called?) are more spiky? I bought this today and it was labeled as a Christmas cactus but I’m pretty sure it’s a thanksgiving cactus. I happened to see your post before I went out today. I didn’t care because it was $2.99! I figured if it lives (seems kind of overwatered), I’ll have a beautiful cactus for $3!

Wow 3 dollers!! Amazing deal!! So yes, thanksgiving cacti tend to have more ā€œsharperā€ leaves, I have also found they are more of a ā€œfloppyā€ plant with thinner leaves then a Christmas cacti. If you have any more questions or need any clarification I would be happy to help!!
