Plant Lives Matter

Hey sorry, no pictures of this, but people who have ponytail palms may notice this. I’ve long wondered why all the ponytail palms sold in stores come with the tops shorn off and the many pups coming out of the sides. That’s not how they grow in nature. And they won’t get any bigger with the top shorn off. So why exactly do nurseries do this? Is it just to make them full at the top, so they look more interesting? I’ve searched online and can’t seem to find an answer. Personally, I think the plant is interesting enough without doing that because it will eventually grow into a big tree! Like my propagated baby.

Nurseries propagate the plants by chopping off the top and planting it. The decapitation encourages new pups along the trunk or from the base. These new pups are also propagated to create separate plants.

Ah thank you! So it’s just an endless loop of propagates. Makes sense!

Yes. It’s an inexpensive way to get new starter plants.
