Hi Friends! This is a Queen of the Night (Epiphyllum Oxypetalum). I brought it home from a green house around a month ago and it’s perked up quite a bit. Still in the nursery pot as I wanted to acclimate it. I watered it for the first time last week and I’m noticing what looks like aerial roots growing from the longest leaves on the plant. Does anyone have experience with these that can advise what I can do to help? I’m assuming it’s to help it grow taller, have you used a moss pole? Or are these blooms? Appreciate any guidance!

Those are aerial roots on a stem that’s looking for more light or water. They are epiphytes like orchids and hoyas. They climb trees to reach the sunlight or sending out limbs to find water. They attach with the aerial roots as they climb. Yours need more light or water. It likes very bright indirect light for about 10 hours. They will grow out leaves once they get light. These are one of my favorite plants. They are also called rainforest cacti because they need more moisture than the typical desert cactus. My plant is very old. The one in the photo is has 5 feet long branches in a one gallon recycled bucket. It gets part sun and part shade all day.

A flower bud is shown. They grow from the notches along the leaf edges.

It’s nicknamed Dutchman’s pipe because of the large flower buds.

Beautiful! Thank you so much for all this information. The foliage alone has made it my favorite but I want to make it as happy as possible so I can witness a bloom. I appreciate your time!

They need plenty of indirect light to put out leaves. Add a grow light. Then, stop watering for about two weeks. The leaves may get a little wrinkled. Then, begin watering and fertilizing again. This often makes it bloom.
