I believe this is a Opuntia humifusa. I live in Iowa where prickly pear are not hardy, so I thought. A couple years ago I was out for a walk and I saw one growing outdoors. I was surprised. It has grown in that spot for over 10 years. Recently while out for a walk I saw that it had lost a pad onto the sidewalk so of course I picked it up. This was about 6 weeks ago and it had already started getting cold. The little pad was sad looking in a little purple. I let it dry for a couple days and then planted it. I'm hoping it will take root. I have another prickly pear that's doing well but I don't know the specific variety I'll add a picture of it maybe you can tell me. Also any pointers about succeeding with this new arrival would be welcome.

I found laying the pad flat on soil rooted better than standing it upright. The plant on left was planted laying the pad down and on the right I planted upright and there is little to no growth. (both planted at the same time)

I live in Arizona and a friend of mine gave me a piece of a cactus in a milk crate and I just put it on the side of the driveway. Well, the next thing I know it was growing out of the milk crate and it flowered I’ve got it out of the milk crate but it flowered and then it flowered again it was never potted. It didn’t have any kind of rootsso I took it and I did put it in the ground. The next thing I know now it’s got a baby so cactus are really hardy. They don’t have to have roots to blossom. Leave them dry out and just let them go.
