Hey guys, this is my cactus named Jack. I’ve had him for about a year and he was given to me as a gift. I have never repotted him and he seems very content in his pot. I was just wondering if anyone had an idea how old he is based off of his looks?? I’ve always been curious. Also, does anyone think I should repot him?

My only long term succulent is an aloe plant named Steve and based on his size, I’d guesstimate Jack to be at least seven years old. I’m likely way off base; regardless, Jack is a good looking guy!

All your new growth at the top is etolated. Cactus really perfer full sun in order to grow right and remain healthy. If you plan to keep growing it inside so far from a window, I suggest looking into putting a grow light above it otherwise your new growth will get skinnier and skinnier impacting its health.

Hey, thank you so much for your response. I took this photo while he was inside. We had a really bad rain storm over the weekend and so we moved him inside while it was raining. We normally do that. Should we not?

It's probably a good idea to prevent damage and over watering. Do you have it in full sun outside? It could be too shaded

He is in full sun, but we recently put him back outside within the past couple months when it started to get cooler we kept him inside the whole time. Should we always leave him outside?

You can keep it outside until like 32 degrees then I would over winter it which means don't water in the winter and keep it either in your garage or a cold room of the of the house. They need dormancy in the winter. It most likely didn't go dormant and that's what caused the etolated new growth.

I saw one of these guys in the botanical gardens in the greenhouse in ABQ. Was about 20 ft tall with lots of branchs and very wide. The was another one equally as tall but i forgot what itype of cactus it was.

i don’t think you need to repot him!! if you see a chunk of roots coming out the drainage hole than you can but don’t upside it too much only 1-2inches bigger :)
