Hello! Apologies if this post is confusing, whatever stage is before beginner..that’s me!! I’ve always wanted to be a plant mom and I got gifted this Echeveria and a Watch Chain for Christmas. Wondering if there’s any specific sign I should look for to make sure I’m doing everything right. I just gave the watch chain a good soak (I was unsure how long ago it was last watered soil was bone dry) but what is a good method for watering the echeveria? Would it be better to submerge it underwater, bottom watering or just a normal water? Also, if anyone knows the specific type of echeveria this is that’d be AMAZING. Honestly just looking for tips. I want to eventually get a monstera later in the year. I live in the 2nd floor of an apartment: my plants are currently in windows that face northeast. Thank you to anyone who read this LOL

    I think you have an Echeveria Harmsii. Also known as Echeveria Ruby Slippers. They are not the typical rosette shape that most people associate with Echeveria. With bright light the leaf will turn ruby color beginning at the edges. It does naturally get leggy. And they require an abundance of bright light. First pic is one I just acquired, and the other two are cuttings and the original plant. As for care, I often use terracotta pots, very gritty soil with small amount of organic mixed in, top water after the soil is bone dry (leaves will feel bendable). Water until water exits drain and then water a bit more. Do not water on the leaves or mist. This is just to help avoid any fungus issues because the plant is inside. They may go for weeks without needing water. I have one Echeveria that is watered about every two months.

      Pic of the soil I use for all my succulents. I add some regular potting soil to this with percentage based on the type of succulent.

      Thank you!!! I believe this may be the correct soil (may take some of the stones off the top layer?) the person who gifted me this has a whole room full of succulents. Do you think this is a good place for these? I feel like my apartment window’s are in weird location.

      Should I maybe try to mix the rocks in more instead of taken them out/leaving them in the top layer?

      I don’t think you need to disturb them now especially since they are fairly new. It would be good to eventually mix in the gravel. But the ruby may not have enough light. I struggle providing enough and I have some strong grow lights. This is why I’m propagating the stems. Because it became too leggy. The watch chain doesn’t need as much light. In the first pic, those are two 70 watt led lights hanging. That’s the equivalent of about an 800 watt incandescent light each. And it still got leggy. And the other pic is my watch chain.
