My mom and son planted this beauty 15 years ago in front of her house. It is now over six feet tall! She is noticing the base has damage and is afraid she’s going to lose it. Any suggestions on what she can do?

It initially looks like it may begin to be corking—a lot tend to do this as they get older. If it feels soft or mushy, it’s rot. Sometimes it also smells a bit foul too, if it’s rotting. The good news is that if it is rot, you can separate it a few inches above the top of the highest rot, let the cut callous over for a few days, and it’ll reroot fairly easily. You’ll loose a few inches but you get a “clean slate” to work with.

Thank you. Once it callous over should we repot immediately?

After the initial cut it takes 3, maybe 4 days to callous over. Make sure the blade is sterile (alcohol and match). I usually wait a week to be on the safe side when rerooting. Some people puff a little sulfur dust on the callous to deter fungal growth but I’ve never noticed a discernable difference between sulfur dust and no dust when rooting though. I mist the soil maybe once a week until I can feel that it’s beginning to anchor itself with roots. It looks like a blue torch cactus and those are mainly propagated through cuttings so it’s not a tall order to reroot it. You could look into rooting powder too. I haven’t used it on cacti, but when I worked at a nursery they’d douse everything and anything in it!
