Hi everyone! So I forgot I had this plant, I haven’t watered it in about 8 months :( but I took it down to water it today and noticed it sprouted a fuzzy thing! I have no clue what’s going on, so please let me know if you do!

I think it will flower from that fuzzy thing. But the roots have probably dessicated, so you'll have to be careful, because if you drench it, it won't be able to take up the water, and may just rot. Water it a little bit every week to encourage new root growth. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Okay! Thank you, I’ll be careful watering it.

Cacti are resilient. The fuzz is the start of it flowering and it is happy if it's flowering. Cacti don't loose their roots unless it's from root rot which is what it'll get if you start watering it weekly. I would just water it once, wait for it to flower and completely dry out again, then repot it in a gritty substrate with little organic matter and resume a regular watering schedule (which the app will give you). Make sure the soil completely dries out in between waterings.

My first thought was it seemed like it was flowering, but I thought there was no way considering how neglected it is. I’ll soak it and let the soil dry out, then repot it like you suggested. It’s currently in a 3” pot, should I just move it to a 4”, or would it prefer more extra space?

Cacti are happiest when they are snug in their pots. Definitely only pot up one size and put it in something breathable like terracotta. You can wait a good couple years until repotting again. The gritty substrate is key though, something fast draining and thats not going to hold onto moisture. You can get a specialty one off Amazon or you can mix your own. If your just repotting this one then honestly a premixed one would be better so you dont have a crazy amount leftover. Look for a mix with a lot of grit and very little organic matter. Good luck! I think it'll be happy.

Also if your going to resume watering it then make sure the lighting requirements are met as well. If growing in doors it needs the sunniest spot available or a grow light if it's not in a window.

Thank you for the advice! It’s hanging in a west facing window, and there’s no trees or building blocking the sun. Plus there’s a plant light in the corner next to the window, I could always move it slightly if need be.

Your basically waking it up from dormancy, so just keep an eye on any new growth if it occurs. If it starts to become etolated then you'll know it needs more light.
