I got these Cacti and succulent three days ago. I havent done anything yet as far as watering or repotting. I know how to take care of the succulent as I've grown them for a few years but im unsure of the cacti. When should i water or repot? Can they share a pot? Do they prefer top or bottom watering? And should my soil has the consistency of succulent or have more pebbles/sand in it? I also sometimes add used coffee grounds is that ok? I havent had a problem but obviously cacti are different. Apparently one is a mini barrel cactus and the other is a moon cactus. The dirt seems fairly dry and i felt the moon cactus and it feels firm. They were purchased from a home depo so who knows what kind of horrible soil they are in LOL 🤣

    i try to put my succulents and cacti into a well-draining soil (there’s specific soil you can buy or just mix perlite, sand, bark, or small pebbles into regular potting soil) ! as far as water, let them dry out completely before watering, but give them a biiig drink, think of their habitat! they are built to survive the dessert :-)

    Should i repot them asap? The cirular one is flowering currently i know some plants shouldnt be mess with while flowering

      I use Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent mix for mine. To answer your questions, adding extra perlite or orchid bark can make it even better with drainage and aeration, but as long as you’re using a cactus mix that isn’t Miracle Grow brand, you’re probably pretty safe. Doesn’t hurt to add some extra bark or perlite if you want an extra chunky mix. I would get some gardening gloves to safely repot your cactus and inspect the roots, and run some room temp water to gently remove some of the old soil. As for the haworthia, that one is more prone to shock, so don’t remove all of the soil, but gently remove some of it alone the sides and top. I use Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder to reduce the risk of shock and help with transplanting or repotting. You can sprinkle it on the roots during a repot. As for watering, I highly recommend bottom watering them all. You can use a bowl/cup/container and fill it with room temp water, set a timer for 10-20 minutes (I like to start with 10, and if the soil isn’t completely saturated, give it another 10 minutes), then take it out and set it on a saucer or in my sink to drain and dry out before putting back in its spot. Bottom watering is great to protect any plants that don’t like getting their leaves wet, and promotes a stronger root system. To help you know when to water it, I would use a toothpick or a bamboo/barbecue skewer and stick it all the way down into the bottom of the soil. Take it back out, and if the soil sticks to it, wait at least 2 days, then check again before watering. If the skewer comes out clean and dry, it’s safe to water. I’ve noticed a common glitch on Planta recently that’s been calling for watering some plants much earlier than you should, so using the skewer method can help you figure out how often your plants really need to be watered. And you can change the watering to a “custom watering schedule” in the plant’s individual settings to change to how often your plants actually takes to dry out. Hope this helps!

      And as for the flowering one, you’re probably fine with repotting it as long as you don’t remove all of the soil. You can remove as much as you can without disturbing much of the roots, replace it with a fresh cactus mix, then bottom water it or add a fertilizer during watering. (If you’re new to fertilizing, I highly recommend Osmocote’s Slow-Release Fertilizer pellets. They’re great for anyone new to fertilizers and make it a lot easier to not risk over fertilizing or burning the leaves from a fertilizer. You can add them to the top of the soil right before you water it or pop a few into the soil mix as you’re repotting. That way they’ll get watered the next time you water that plant without risk of them rolling off the top of the soil.)

      No problem! Good luck! Oh, and personally, I would keep them separated. It’s fun to have more plants, and it’s also much easier to keep them alive if they have different watering schedules and needs different amounts of time to dry out. I don’t know if coffee grounds are necessary for cacti, and you might find it easier to use a liquid fertilizer or fertilizer pellets. Coffee grounds are great for plants that need nitrogen or prefer slightly acidic soil, like an African Violet or flowers found in gardens. And I think the biggest concern to check for is that the cacti weren’t potted too low into the soil or pots. That’s fairly common with box store cacti, so checking and removing any excess soil will help it thrive!
