Hello! My plant keeps losing the leaves at the bottom and I don’t… | The Cactus & Succulent Circle | Planta community

Hello! My plant keeps losing the leaves at the bottom and I don’t know what I’m doing to make this happen or how to stop it? Does anyone know if this is healthy and normal. Also, the color of my plant is getting a lot darker, this is the darkest she’s ever been, is this okay? (Obviously my first plant hahaha)

How often are you watering it and how much sunlight is it getting each day? <3

I water it every two and a half weeks and keep it in the window constantly

Do you water it once the soil is completely dry? I use ‘westland cacti & succulent feed’ as well which seems to help

I mean I’m pretty sure it’s completely dry… I guess I haven’t checked with a stick or anything though so that could be it 🤔 I’m not quite sure what soil I have because I just used the same soil it came with 🤷‍♀️

Hmm yeah perhaps repot it. Try remove as much soil as u can without damaging the roots. I use ‘Terrarium Potting Mix with Perlite’ soil x

It’s hard for succulents to get enough sun indoors in the winter. I have all mine under grow lights until it gets warm enough to move outside. Succulents can change colors a little when they’re stressed. Like Brontë said, repot with better draining soil and only water when completely dry. Good luck!

That’s totally normal especially in winter, you can actually semi-hibernate them over the winter months by withholding water. I don’t water my collection from October-March unless they get really wrinkly and sad. It looks nice and compact in the center, keep doing what you’re doing. You can pull the leaves if it bothers you but the plant will absorb as much water as it can from them and then dry out

Thank you! Yeah I might start being picky about how much I’m watering them because after talking with a plant friend I found out just putting them under the water faucet and letting it run with drainage isn’t a good idea lol

use distilled water for all your plants as well. tap water and drinking water both have chlorine in them so its harmful to the plants.

I bottom water all my succulents but that’s because I don’t have great circulation in my apartment and if the leaves get wet I get powdery mildew. That said you want to let them fully dry out and then deluge them with water. I usually let them sit over night in the water basin, depending on the pot size I won’t water for 2 weeks to a month even in the growing season. Keeps them compact and colourful

Thank you! I’ll have to try this, I haven’t done the water basin yet… But that might be a good idea, especially when I’m over watering my plants
