My succulents are growing really long and have all of this brown at the bottom. I can’t imagine this is normal. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

It depends on your watering schedule, how much light the plant is getting, etc., but the most common reason would be overwatering. If I were you I would chop off the dead bottom and stick the green stems in the new well draining soil for the new root growth 🙂

depending on what kind of succulents, they could also be stretched out (and dying) due to lack of light. could you give us a little more info on watering/light/type?

Looks like Planta has been advising to water it twice monthly. It used to be outdoors, but I brought it in over the winter. Interestingly it looks like it used to be purple and now is green. I have it under a 6000 Kelvin grow light.

Twice monthly during winter is a lot of water, I usually do once a month during winter, twice a month during summer. It looks like the grow lights were not enough and that’s why it stretched out. I would cut, propagate in new (very well draining) soil, wait until it roots and take it back outside.

from my research, it looks like the main problems are overwatering and that they just don’t like being inside. i would cut off all the brown and see how it does from there with very little watering (maybe more like 1x per month?). people seem to recommend cutting off the green and trying to re-root, but i don’t know that’s totally necessary. then just try to re-acclimate outside when you can!

Call me a cold heartless person but this is the kind of thing I would rehome and go buy a new one. 😬 But I’m the first one to admit that I’m a plant snob. If it doesn’t want to be pretty for me, it goes away, usually to a good friend who thrives on plant rescues. It’s okay if you don’t have the desire or patience to rehab a sick plant. Not all of us are into that. Now, if it were an animal, that’d be different. I will die rescuing anything with a beating heart and four or less legs.
