Hello everyone! I just got this lovely Gymnocalycium friedrichii 'Variegata' from a local plant shop and wanted some advice about watering. I watered it yesterday, and as it is only in a two inch pot, it is already completely dry. Im reluctant to follow the ā€œevery two week scheduleā€ that Planta gives me because of how quickly it dries. What do you guys think? How often should it be watered? I am well aware that they want to dry completely between waterings, but two weeks completely dry seems a bit much. Thanks!

Wow!!! I LOVE IT! Its so pretty!! Your question depends on the soil its in AND how much humidity is in your area. But if you don't want to wait for 2 weeks then just make

Make sure the soil is completely dried. Mo moisture in it at all.

Succulents retain so much moisture in the plant that it can withstand drought conditions (desert plants) for quite some time, I think 2 weeks is just fine, dare I say too much. I’ve often heard once a month especially if it’s not being kept outdoors.

I know with succulents (not sure about cacti specifically) that when the leaves start looking a little wrinkly then that means they need water. I agree that it’s hard to know how long is long enough without drastically over doing the dryness lol. My jade plant and snake plants I’ve noticed that if I water once they just begin to wrinkle then the wrinkles decrease after the watering which indicates that got enough.

Also, looks like yours is in a plastic pot which retains moisture longer. I’d suggest a porous pot like terra cotta.

Thank you! I got it in a terracotta pot right after this photo. I think I was underestimating how tough these little guys are, because it’s been doing just fine with the two week schedule. I’m just use to calatheas and alocasias that throw a fit if their soil dries too much šŸ˜†
